..."George Papandreou addresses PES Convention: “inequality is the core of the crisis”...25/11/2011...George Papandreou...
...George Papandreou, leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and President of the Socialist International, said in Brussels that “conservatives are all talk, no action”...Speaking at the inaugural day of the Party of European Socialists (PES) Progressive Convention on November 25th, the Greek ex-prime minister underlined that the financial crisis is the cause and consequence of a “deep democratic deficit”.
“Under conservative rule, Europe has lost his role and potential. Now, we have to go beyond their politics of fear, their fissures and scapegoats; and remember that we are all European. This is our strength, not our weakness”. He added that; “only together we can overcome the crisis and contribute to a very different global society. We have the power IF we are not divided”.
The PES Declaration of Principles, adopted by public vote at the PES Council the day before, underlined these same fundamental ideals and promoted an economic growth based on solid values, human and social rights, more and better employment, and environmental sustainability. In Papandreou’s opinion, “a concentration of wealth and power has built upon the inequalities in countries and between countries. This inequality is the core of the crisis: it was in 1929 and it is today”.
PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, in his farewell speech, stated his admiration for Papandreou, describing him as; “a person of strong convictions who faced the worst crisis in European history standing firmly on social and progressive values”.
The PES interim President, Sergei Stanishev, stated that; "George has been a champion promoter of the PES. He has stood with us in solidarity and we are proud to stand with him. As George has said, we are all European. Standing together is our way out of this crisis".
...Mr. Papandreou's speech will be posted here this afternoon (check for updates)
