..."Save ERT Public Broadcasting in Greece"...(>action.hellenicleaders<)

Save ERT!http://action.hellenicleaders.com

..."This week, the Greek government abruptly shut down its public broadcasting operation, removing a critical voice from the media dialogue. Analysts are calling themove a "cultural calamity"1:
The ERT online operation is a lifeline for the Greek diaspora. ERT World might not have had the prestige of the BBC's World Service but it was the main link to the homeland for Greeks in Melbourne, London and Chicago. Greeks everywhere have been outraged and demonstrations have been organised in many European cities. The archbishop of Athens and major Greek diaspora organisations have joined the chorus of condemnation. The attack on the public broadcaster is part of the wider conflict between private media moguls and the fast shrinking public media.

ERT's needed reforms could have been accomplished without shutting down a worldwide operation that has provided news and educational programming to Greeks and those of Greek descent around the world.

Public broadcasters are a key part of any thriving democracy, and the closure of ERT is a step in the wrong direction for Greece.

We'll send this petition both to ERT and the Greek government."...
